We (my kids and I) planted four cauliflower transplants and 4 from directly sowing seed in the ground. The transplants went on to fully mature and the ones I planted from seed tried to mature when they were only half grown. So I have four little miniature sized cauliflowers ready to pick alongside the fully matured cauliflowers. Transplants are the way to go for sure.
I ordered my Snowball Self-Blanching cauliflower seeds from Baker Creek. The cauliflower did excellent and turned out to be 6 inches in diameter. Not bad, if I do say so myself.
Organic cauliflower is mighty expensive at the store and the cauliflower there was half the size as mine. Hmmm. Maybe I am saving myself some money. I didn’t even have to water much this past winter because of the glorious rain we have been getting. Next year I will definitely plant more cauliflower and broccoli because of how much my kids liked it…heck, I had to fight them off to get just a little.
Anyone else growing cauliflower?
That looks really good Staci! I didn’t grow any cauliflower this year. I actually had to pull all of my brocolli plants because I got so many cabbage loopers. It just grossed me out too much. How do you keep them off your plants?
Yes! Mine is not as mature as yours yet, though. I planted the seed directly in late December. It is growing like mad lately, can’t wait to see how it forms up.
Hannah,
I haven’t had much trouble with cabbage loopers. My problem has been with aphids invading my kale and my new little pepper plants that I haven’t planted in the ground yet.
Here’s a link to a neat website called Arbico Organics. They have organic pesticides and insects to release in your garden to take care of your problem. http://www.arbico-organics.com/loopers.html
Hi, I grew some califlower from transplants..Next year I don’t think I will grow that. It isn’t one of my favorites..maybe beets instead..Your califlower looks great!
HI Staci,
I bought the $1 tomatoes, my cauliflower is hovering/starting to make “fruit” now and I really don’t know what it’s doing. It along w/ my broccoli is from seed and the broccoli is making florets and I have no idea how big they’ll get but the cauliflower from the same planting time has not even started to fruit/floret yet. We’ll see!
Thanks for blogging, erin
