These are the seeds that I will be planting this year…
The list includes:
Spinach-Bloomsdale Long Standing (old seed that I hope comes up)
Broccoli-Calabrese Green Sprouting (these were good last year)
Cabbage-Henderson’s Charleston Wakefield (my dog trampled these last year, not sure how they will do)
Cauliflower-Snowball Self-Blanching (haven’t tried these before)
Lettuce-May Queen (butterhead), Little Gem (short, little green leaf), Petite Rouge (short little red/green romain type)
Nasturtium-Dwarf Jewel Mix (haven’t tried these before, edible flowers, good for salads)
Kale-Blue Curled Scotch (these grow great)
Chinese Cabbage-Perfection Drumhead Savoy (dark green, bugs get to these towards the end, need to remember that and take a proactive approach)
Leek-Giant Musselburgh (dog trampled most of these last year, but the couple that lasted were huge)
Onion-Red Creole (we’ll see if I can get any of these transplanted, roots can’t be disturbed)
Cilantro
Carrot-St. Valery (sow in ground, takes FOREVER to mature)
Swiss Chard-Five Color Silverbeet (sow in ground, these do great!)
Beets-Golden (orange, love these), Chioggia (haven’t tried these before, are white/red ringed inside), Detroit Dark Red (standby red) sow all of these in ground
Parsley-Giant of Italy (haven’t grown these from seed before)
Chives-(haven’t grown these from seed before)
I will start all of these seeds indoors in a day or so except for the beets, swiss chard, and carrots. These 3 I will sow directly into the ground in October.
I also have some 4 Listadia de Ganta eggplants that seem to be exploding with eggplants, a handful of pepper plants that will soon take off again and some basil.
What are y’all planning on planting?
I’m not quite sure what we will be growing yet. My mother in law gave me a ton of seeds and I’m still trying to figure out what/when I can grow things. My box is ready to go, I just have to do some more research and then I’ll be ready 🙂
The only things we are growing in common is the broccoli and the parsley (my seeds are from BC also!)
I’ll be planting lots of lettuces (these have to be sown indoors?), carrots and peas. My summer stuff is still going. I’m actually having a second go-round with tomatoes and squashes. I’m very new to gardening so not sure if they’ll work but I’m hoping they will.
Hannah,
No, you don’t have to start your lettuce indoors. You don’t have to start anything indoors if you don’t want to. I just get a head start on mine because my soil isn’t ready for me to plant any earlier. I like to get them in as early as I can because I like to get them out as early as I can to make room in February and March for my spring veggies. Tomatoes ideally need to be in by Feb. 15 because our season is so short.
I also plant all of my plants from seed because $25 for seeds and sterile seed starting soil is much more inexpensive than paying way over $50 for plants every season. I also sell my extra plants so that it pays for my gardening/eating “hobby”. 🙂
That’s a great idea, selling your extra plants!
And I agree about the benefits of planting seeds. It also is such a thrill to see something that you planted thrive and grow! Much more pride involved than when you bought a plant and put it in your ground.
Thanks for the tips!
Sounds like you have quite a selection there! I am going to take a look at my Johnny’s Seed Catalog and try and find somee unique varieties to plant instead of the same ole thing. I probably will get some transplants from a reliable nursery ( NOT HOME DEPOT)! I am working on a good September Garden Tip , due shortly… Best of luck to y’all on your new fall gardens..It’s that time of year again..
