We will put the shade up tomorrow on the tomatoes, but in the meantime we have been preparing our shade screen material with these grommets for the corners. We’ll use locking ties to attach them to the poles that we have already set up…

Today the temperature is supposed to be 94 with it rising tomorrow to 99 and then 103 throughout next week.

I’ve waited this long to put up shade because once the shade screen goes up, the bees can’t get in to pollinate very well.  And once it gets up to around 100 degrees the flowers won’t set fruit any longer anyway, which is why the shade is going up tomorrow.  Shade is necessary now because if I were to leave it unshaded, (which I’ve learned from trial and error) my tomatoes that are hit with direct sunlight will either crack and start shriveling or they will get sun scalded (cooked).  The shade prolongs their impending death just a little longer.

My dad has a really neat way to shade his garden by training his grape vine up over his garden attaching it to strings that are secured to the side of his house and fence.
